Babies Benefit From Probiotics

For babies, life is pretty easy. They basically just eat and sleep, plus they get to wear really cute clothes and sleep in a tricked-out crib. They don’t have to work or bring home the bacon; a baby’s life is like chilling on a Carribean vacation, when you think about it.

Still, it’s not all peaches and cream. There’s a lot of poop to deal with. And puke. Spit-up. Soggy diapers. Gas.

Here at Lifeway, we have a history of helping babies’ bellies feel better when life gets rough. In one Georgetown University Medical Center study, kefir was shown to help reduce antibiotic-induced diarrhea in certain children experiencing health problems.

Research from the University of Western Australia shows that preemies who received friendly bacteria in the form of probiotics enjoyed enhanced survival rates.

Another study published by the Society of Chemical Industry shows that feedingbabies kefir (Probugs, anyone?!) may help to protect against certain allergicreactions.

Now we have word that breast milk – widely considered to be the perfect nutrition source for infants with its textbook  balance of carbohydrates, fats, and protein – naturally contains probiotics that can reduce or eliminate intestinal pain. In a new study, published online in the FASEB Journal, investigators used mice to demonstrate how Lactobacillus reuteri can reduce the force of muscle contractions in the gut within minutes of introducing the bacteria to the intestinal tractL. reuteri is naturally found in human breast milk.

So drink up, babies! And enjoy the good life while it lasts...preschool is right around the corner.
