The weather in Chicago is finally beautiful, and people are taking advantage of it by running, biking and rollerblading outside. But when the temperature soars, even the most experienced athletes are at risk of dehydration and heat exhaustion. Toss in humidity, and an overheated runner can wind up in the ER faster than you can say “Gatorade.” Keep the following tips in mind to keep your cool and make it past the finish line, wherever it may be: 1. Limit lattes and Long Islands. Avoid caffeine or alcohol, both of which are dehydrating.
2. Warm up. Try stretching in the shade for 10 minutes so your body can acclimate.
3. Make a change. Working out in a drenched shirt will hinder your ability to cool off - imagine using a wet sponge to clean up a spill. Wear breathable, wicking fabrics and keep a clean, dry change in your locker.
4. I’ll drink to that. The three key words of running? Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Even if you’re not thirsty, force yourself to drink every 15 minutes while working out in the heat. Not racing? You’ll know you’re properly hydrated when your urine is pale and clear.
5. Recharge with kefir! Full of protein and carbs, Lifeway kefir is an excellent recovery drink. That's why you'll always find us at the finish line of various races, walks and fun runs. Chug, chug, chug!
