Hellloooo, holiday season! Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukah, Kwanzaa or anything in between, there’s no excuse for leaving kefir out of the mix. We decided to have some fun and come up with a list of ways to incorporate our creamy concoction into your December mix. Check it out and tell us which ones you tried:
Leave Santa a smarter snack
Enough with the milk, already! Reward Santa for a job well-done by leaving out a plate of sliced fruit, a dish of almonds and a tall glass of low-fat pomegranate kefir. Not only will your treat provide him with enough energy to carry him through his remaining 23 states, but you’ll help him get back into his size-38 red suit: Three daily servings of low-fat or fat-free dairy products such as kefir have been showed to encourage weight loss. (That belly of Santa’s is an abdominal fat-filled ticking time bomb waiting to explode all over the North Pole.) Plus, kefir contains a hefty dose of fiber, which will help keep him regular. Chocolate chip cookies can be quite constipating, you know.
Eight nights of light
Save up nine rinsed-out bottles of kefir: Paint five blue and four white. Enlist your kids to help cut flame shapes out of yellow construction paper, then glue toothpicks to each “flame.” Using a knife or other sharp tool, poke a small hole in the cap of each bottle. (This is a grown-up job.) Line up all of the bottles in a row on your kitchen table or island; attach one yellow “flame” to a blue bottle by inserting the toothpick into the small hole. Starting tonight, the first night of Hanukah, “light” a new "flame" every night: By the eighth night, you’ll have a fully-lit menorah glowing safely from your table.
Kefir bottle ornaments
Glass orbs and twinkle lights are so…expected. Instead, rinse out a dozen 8-oz bottles of Lifeway kefir and tie some string around the neck before re-capping. Hang your new probiotic-enhanced ornaments from the tree – Pumpkin Spice works especially well. Feel free to jazz them up with sparkly rhinestones, festive ribbons or pretty paint.
ProBug stocking stuffers
Candy will rot your kids’ teeth and gift cards will inevitably get lost. Stash a Goo-Berry Pie ProBug in your little one’s stocking instead for a healthy Christmas Day treat. Just don’t turn the fireplace on or all those precious probiotics will melt away into oblivion.
Whip up some kefir eggnog
Homemade eggnog is usually an artery-clogging fat bomb. Not ours! Check out this health-ified version:
Ingredients
6 eggs
4 cups (1 32 oz bottle) Lifeway Plain Lowfat Kefir
1/4 cup sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 tsp salt, if desired
In a large saucepan, beat together eggs, sugar and salt, if desired. Stir in 2 cups of Lifeway Lowfat Plain Kefir. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture reaches 160 degrees. Remove from heat. Stir in an additional 2 cups of kefir and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. Cover and refrigerate until thoroughly chilled, several hours or overnight. Just before serving, pour into a pitcher. Garnish with cinnamon sticks or a sprinkling of ground nutmeg and serve immediately.
