OK, let’s settle this once and for all: Do you pronounce kefir “KEE-fuhr” or “keh-FEER”?
In Russia, it’s the latter, with emphasis on the second part of the word. That sounds lovely and exotic, compared to the Americanized emphasis on “KEE.” Some people, though, think that reminds them too much of Kiefer Sutherland, who, while talented and good-looking, isn’t necessarily who we want to think of as we gulp our probiotics. (There’s also a third possibility, “keh-ferr,” with no accent anywhere, but that just sounds a little wimpy, no?) We’ve read that French children call in “kee-fee,” which we think sounds just adorable.
