We had a fantastic time at the ADA conference, and were thrilled to hear from Registered Dietitians and nutritionists from across the country who told us they routinely “prescribe” Lifeway kefir to their patients. From lactose intolerance to managing chemotherapy’s side effects, staying healthy while on antibiotics to living with Celiac Disease, kefir’s 10 strains of live and active cultures seem to be the nutrition professional’s tool of choice.
One constructive criticism we did received had to do with cost.
“I love kefir and I drink it all the time myself, but it’s a little expensive,” one RD commented. “Why does it cost so much?”
We’re glad she asked, as this is the perfect opportunity to dispel some financial myths surrounding kefir.
The retail cost of a 32-oz bottle of Lifeway kefir is about $3.50.
At Lifeway.net, you can sign up for a coupon for $1 off of two Lifeway products, taking the cost of one bottle to $3 for 32 ounces. (Cost per ounce: About $0.09) Yoplait Whips! (4 ounces) retail for $0.72 each: (Cost per ounce: About $0.18)
And Yoplait Go-GURT Fizzix retails for $2.79 for eight 2.25-oz tubes. (Cost per ounce: About $0.16)
Looks like our kefir actually costs HALF of what many of the leading brands of yogurt cost...plus, we’ve got 10 strains of live and active cultures (versus just one or two) and way more belly-slimming, appetite-filling fiber per serving.
Need more convincing that our immune-boosting kefir is worth opening your pocketbook? Take a gander at the cost of getting sick with Swine Flu for one week: (Calculations originally found at iVillage.) Lost wages: $500
Childcare (for a sick little one):Up to $700
A trip to the doctor’s office: $18.75 (if insured); $170 if uninsured)
Prescription meds: $19.18 (if insured, $95 if uninsured)
OTC help: Up to $28
Total: $1265.93 (for the insured); $1493 (uninsured)
How sweet is that kefir tasting now?
