Even if you don’t have kids, this is pretty exciting new. According to brand new research out this month, probiotic supplements may help reduce death and disease in premature babies. The study, in the May issue of Pediatrics, looked at the breadth of research already published on the topic and concluded that in babies born before 34 weeks (40 weeks is considered full-term), supplementation with probiotics led to lower mortality rates and reduced rates of an illness called necrotizing enterocolitis, in which intestinal tissue actually dies.
We’re not suggesting you feed your newborn babies kefir – we suggest you check with your ob/gyn or child’s pediatrician before introducing a new food early on – but this research does confirm what we at Lifeway have known for years: PROBIOTICS WORK! They keep us strong, sooth our stomachs, shore up our healthy bacteria levels and, when drenched in yummy, liquid deliciousness (aka kefir), they taste awesome!
Hooray for good bugs and a safe and speedy recovery to premies everywhere.
