Led by patient organizations representing 27 countries on four continents, World IBD Day is being celebrated globally today, May 19, 2010.Patient groups from the United States, Canada, Australia, 23 European nations, and Brazil are working to draw awareness to inflammatory bowel diseases. IBD is an umbrella term encompassing Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, two painful, chronic, incurable digestive diseases that affect five million people worldwide (1.4 million in the U.S. alone).

You could run a 5K race or a half-marathon to raise money for IBD, like Kate O’Reilly. You could rock a sassy tee-shirt that proclaims, “Old Chronie” or “Gluten-free princess,” like these. You can ask your hairstylist to participate in the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America’s Cuts for CCFA program and donate $2.00 of every haircut they complete over a week.
